Safety plan

BRANZINO the Challenge 2024 - Safety plan

Premise

In support of what already regulated in the general conditions of the event (official regulation), is below defined the specific security plan in force for the 2024 edition of the Branzino the Challenge event.

Basic rules complementary to safety terms

In addition to compliance with all the conditions imposed by the regulation, the participant is obliged to wear the life jacket for the whole duration of the event (from departure to landing, from start to end of the race).

Also make sure in advance that all personal effects are sealed in special waterproof floating envelopes, preferably contained inside water-tight containers.

Behavioural rules in the presence of adverse weather

In the event of excessive wind gusts in accordance with the threshold laid down in the regulation (planned or unexpected)

  • free from any anchorage at the bottom

  • disengage the propeller or flipper drive system for kayaks that are equipped with it in order not to run aground on the areas with emerging and submerged algae (West lagoon)

  • lay down any accessory or tool that could contribute to the sailing effect

  • maintain the position of the kayak with the bow against the wind and move to the nearest sheltered spot

  • in case of excessive strong and continuous wind gusts that overwhelm the physical effort, it is suggested to let drift by the wind (always keeping the kayak controlled with the bow against the wind) until you beach on the ground where you will be safe

In case of lightning storm

  • immediately stop fishing by laying the fishing rods horizontally on the kayak and any equipment and/or accessory held in a vertical position that may or may not represent an electricity conductor

Rescue/intervention resquests - Behavioural rules in the presence of general physical difficulty, injury and/or illness of the individual, or of third party competitors

In case of general physical difficulty, injury and/or illness

  • communicate by phone, or with the whatsapp application (see telephone number provided by the organizers), to the organization the reason of the difficulty by transmitting the current location always through the whatsapp application

  • if the competitor is in favorable conditions, he shall reach the nearest land area and inform the organization providing the location by contacting the phone number provided through whatsapp

In the event of general physical difficulty, injury and/or illness of a third party

  • there is an obligation to provide first aid to the participant in difficulty, verifying the conditions of the injured person

  • communicate by phone, or through whatsapp (see telephone number provided by the organizers) the reason of the difficulty of the third competitor by transmitting the current location to the organizators always through whatsapp

  • if the third-party competitor is in favourable conditions, it is suggested to accompany him to the nearest ground area by updating the organization on his position by contacting the phone number provided through whatsapp

Rescue/intervention resquests - Behavioural rules in case of overturning of the kayak

Should the kayak overturn, either by force caused by an external agent (wind) or accidentally by own distraction/negligence, it is suggested to remain clinging to the floating hull following the procedure:

premised the likely impossibility of the competitor to get back on his own kayak

  • if you see other competitors call first aid

  • if no other competitors are present, contact the organisers by telephone, if the telephone is usable

  • if no other competitors are present and the telephone apparatus is not usable, try to swim to the nearest shore remaining clinging to the floating hull (hold a raised arm at times, shake it, to facilitate its identification by the support boats or some competitor)

Intervention/Rescue/Control Units

On the ground

N.1 mobile unit of the Italian Red Cross with qualified medical personnel on board (primary location at the logistic area of the event - platform of the Circolo Canottieri of Orbetello).

Control staff equipped with long-range optical equipment.

In the water

N.6 mobile units, with motor propulsion, for the rapid movement inside the water area engaged by the participants subdivided in 3 units in the West lagoon and 3 units in the East lagoon (if the event takes place in one lagoon at a time, there will be 3 instead of 6).

Additional control and monitoring staff present on kayaks, equipped with long-range optical viewers.

Indicative breakdown of lagoon areas according to the allocation of water intervention units

Overall plan identifying the boundaries of the race field and the areas arranged for fishing competition

Subdivision of safety dials in the East Lagoon

  • East Quadrant 1 > n.1 motorized mobile unit

  • East Quadrant 2 > n.1 motorized mobile unit

  • East Quadrant 3 > n.1 motorized mobile unit

Subdivision of safety dials in the West Lagoon

  • West Quadrant 1 > n.1 motorized mobile unit

  • West Quadrant 2 > n.1 motorized mobile unit

  • West Quadrant 3 > n.1 motorized mobile unit

Order of priority for the action of the units in water

In taking charge of and subsequent handling of rescue/intervention requests, the following priorities will be respected as determined in the internal security procedure of the organisation:

  • immediate rescue by the mobile unit responsible for the quadrant in which you are standing

  • if there are multiple requests for intervention within the same quadrant, the other units will be diverted if available and not already engaged with other requests in their quadrants

  • priority will be given to intervention according to the gravity of the condition/condition of the competitor (in case of multiple requests within the same quadrant)
